City Takes Aim at Cigarette Butt Litter

Cigarette butts are the most frequently littered item in America. The Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program is the nation’s largest program aimed at eliminating cigarette litter.

Through the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Grant, the City of Deerfield Beach will be partnering with the Loggerhead Marine Life Center to install cigarette ash receptacles on the Deerfield Beach Pier. For every ash receptacle installed, research shows that the littering rate decreases by 9%.

The receptacles will be installed on June 15th after an educational presentation about the threats of cigarette butt litter. This short presentation with begin at 2 pm in the DFB Shop at the International Fishing Pier located at 200 N.E. 21st Avenue. The public is invited to attend.

The City of Deerfield Beach already partners with the Loggerhead Marine Life Center through the Responsible Pier Initiative, which provides first-responders on fishing piers with the necessary resources to respond effectively to sea turtle injuries and strandings on or around fishing piers.
